Rescreening Step-By-Step Instructions

Rescreening with Phifer Screen in Aluminum Frames

Removing old spline - Photo A Aligning screen material - Photo B Cutting screen corners - Photo C Rolling screen material - Photo D Inserting spline - Photo E Trimming excess screen - Photo F Rolling in screen and spline - Photo G Final trimming of screen - Photo H

1. Lay the screen frame on a smooth, flat surface like a table or workbench.

2. Use a screwdriver or knife to pry up the old spline and remove it (Photo A). Make sure any latches or braces stay in place. Clean the frame thoroughly. Replace the spline if it's brittle or damaged.

3. Lay the new screen over the frame, aligning it with two edges of the spline groove (Photo B). Let the screen overlap by about 1/8". Cut the corner at a 45° angle (Photo C).

4. Use the convex end of your screen rolling tool to press the screen into the spline groove. Hold the roller at a 45° outward angle to avoid tearing the screen (Photo D).

5. Switch to the concave end of the roller to press the spline into the groove over the screen (Photo E). Keep the spline aligned to avoid damage. Do not overstretch the spline.

6. Cut the screen at a 45° angle at the corner again (Photo C).

7. Repeat the process for each side: first rolling in the screen (convex tool), then the spline (concave tool) (Photos D & E).

8. Trim excess screen along the final two edges, allowing a 1/8" overlap (Photo F). Use the same rolling method, keeping tension in the screen for a smooth finish.

Rescreening with Phiferglass® Screen

1. Follow steps 1–3 above.

2. Using the concave roller, roll in both the screen and spline together starting from one corner (Photo G). Keep the screen aligned as you roll around all four sides. If wrinkles appear, remove and re-roll. Small wrinkles should tighten up naturally as you finish.

3. Trim the excess screen with a utility knife, cutting on top of the spline, angled outward (Photo H).

Replacing Fiberglass Screen Panels in Pool and Patio Enclosures

1. Pre-cut the top, bottom, and side splines. Cut them about ½" shorter than the panel sides to account for stretch.

2. Tape the new Phiferglass screen to the top of the panel with duct or masking tape.

3. Use a concave roller to roll in the top spline with the screen.

4. Repeat for the bottom, pulling gently for tension.

5. Roll in both sides the same way.

6. Trim off any excess screening.

Maintenance Tips

Phifer aluminum and fiberglass screening materials require minimal upkeep. To maintain clarity and airflow:

  • Vacuum screens regularly to remove dust.
  • Wash screens with mild soap and rinse with clean water.

Ask for it by name: Phifer Aluminum or Fiberglass Insect Screening.
